well there is an easier way... it is called substitution... what you do is take one equation that is already set to y or x and then you replace it with the y or x on that equation...
for example-
y=2x-4, you take that and substitute it and the new equation would be 2(2x-4)=-x,
then you do distributive property so the equatoin would be 2x-8=-x
now you can solve for x.
then you solve for x and plug it in the y equation.
