First of all, NAME THINGS:

let x = cost of a backpack
let y = cost of a binder

Laura bought 1 backpack and 5 binders for $56.09
1x + 5y = $56.09

Mindy bought 2 backpacks and 3 binders for $73.96
2x + 3y = $73.96

So, you have two equations in two variables:

1x + 5y = 56.09
2x + 3y = 73.96

Solve that system by your favorite method. When you know the value of x and the value of y, you should be able to evaluate the uncle's cost, which is
4x + 1y

Re: word problem

im sorry i got this far i dont know how to solve with multiple variables ie x and y

Well if that's the case, see your teacher: we can't teach here.
