Hey

I was asked: All quadratic equations ________ give answers in integers. (By answers they mean the 2 roots or x-intercepts)

The answer choices for the blank was:

A. Always
B. Sometimes
C. Never

I chose sometimes, since they can be fractions as well, and a fraction is not an integer. Is this correct?

Thanks!

Very poorly thought through question - but sometimes seems to be the correct response.

They can also give answers in complex numbers, not only integers and fractions. Complex numbers should be introduced before quadratic equations. If I remember correctly, in my high school the introduction to quadratic equations came right after the chapter on complex numbers then followed by an in-depth analysis of equivalent equations followed by an introduction to the nature of the solution of quadratic equations.

But it really makes no sense to say that all quadratic equations sometimes give integer solutions!

For example, the equation x^2- 4= 0 "always" has integer solutions, the equation x^2- 2= 0 "never" has integer solutions.

That's just a badly worded problem.
