I am having some difficulty with inverse functions in algebra. Could you explain about an inverse function and each step to work the problem out?

Given y = 3x - 2, solve for x.

I would appreciate some assistance in working this problem out.

y=3x-2 Solve for x
Change x & y: x=3y-2.

Then solve for y.

Are you trying to find the inverse function, where you end up with another "y=" formula? Or are you trying to solve "y = 3x - 2" for x?

(The first is one process, called "function inversion". The second is another process, somewhat related, called "solving literal equations". But the answers would not be the same, is why I ask.)

Thank you.

Eliz.
