interval notation

My teacher gave us a worksheet and on the paper it says: "Express the inequalities in interval notation":

a. x < 1

b. x > -5

my problem is i dont know what interval notation means. im pretty sure that its fairly simple. I would greatly appreciate a simple explanation, if possible. Thanks
