Word problem solving.
In order to earn an A in Algebra,Mark must obtain an average score of at least 90. On his first 4 exams Mark scored 94,83,88, and 92. the final exam counts as two test score. what score does Mark need on the final?

Hi !

Where are you stuck ?

What have you done so far ?

Cheers ~ Mark 8-)

Averaging a collection of numbers is not a word problem. It's a skill, like knowing the multiplication table or knowing how to divide.

To find an average, we add the numbers and then divide by their count.

Here's an example. I'll average the four given scores.

94 + 83 + 88 + 92 = 357

357/4 = 89.25

The average of the first four scores is 89.25

Does that make sense?

After Mark takes the final, there will be six scores to average because the final counts as two scores.

Let the symbol x represent the unknown score on the final. If the overall average is to be at least 90, then we can write an equation.

(94 + 83 + 88 + 92 + x + x)/6 = 90

Solve this equation for x.
