Hello,

I have a math problem that reads " Find two values for y that make this statement true: | y | = 5."
What does the | mean? (In | y | )

Thanks for your time!

Those symbols mean absolute value. Absolute value is always positive. Therefore absolute value of 5 = 5 and absolute value of -5 = 5

\(\displaystyle >>>\)Absolute value is always positive. \(\displaystyle <<<\)

Therefore absolute value of 5 = 5 and absolute value of -5 = 5

No, the absolute value of a number is not always positive.

\(\displaystyle \ |0| = 0,\) for instance.

The absolute value of a number, then, is always nonnegative.

you are absolutely correct. Zero is not negative or positive. Thanks for the correction.
