I'm sorry to hear that your textbook and your classroom instructor didn't cover this topic. It's one that causes many students dificulty, and it's too bad that you're having to do homework without any help!

Fortunately, there are loads of great lessons available online!

. . . . .Google results for "negative numbers"

Once you have studied (at least two lessons!) and have learned the basic terms and techniques, please attempt this exercise. If you get stuck, or are unsure of your steps or solution, please reply, showing all of your work and reasoning, and we'll be glad to check it over.

Thank you! :D

to be honest i am not in school, i am 22 wanting to get a GED. math is my biggest problem. i never learned math in high school which is why i am struggling with a fairly easy question.. heres how i work the question

-18 + 4 - (-7) + 2

first i put + in front of positive numbers and change the subtraction into addition which is what i read i should do.. like this

(-18)+(+4)+(-7)+(+2)

-18 + +4 = -14
-14 + -7 = -21
-21 + +2 = -19

so my answer would be -19 but i am skeptical on whether that is correct.

i will also read up on negative numbers, thanks.

-18 + 4 - (-7) + 2 = -18 + 4 + 7 + 2

- (-7) is interpreted as the opposite of -7, which is +7

-18 + 4 + 7 + 2

combine your positive numbers ...

-18 + 13

combine the -18 with the +13 ...

... you get -5.

I was forgetting to add the opposite of -7.. Thank you, this was helpful, I appreciate it.
