What is the infimum of the set {x ∈ Q : 3 < x^2 ≤ 4}

The answer key said the answer was sqrt(3). I thought the infimum was -2 because that is the smallest possible number in the set and by definition, the infimum is the largest lowest bound. The question confuses me as the set can be described as the union of the sets [-2, -sqrt(3)) & (sqrt(3), 2], each of which are bounded.

So is what is the infimum of the set?

I agree with you. The smallest number in the set, and, therefore, the infimum, is -2.
