Rectangle ABCD is 10 cm long and 5cm wide. Point P is located X centimetres from A on side AB. Point Q is located y centimetres from A on side AD. For what values of y is it possible to locate a point R on side BC such that angle QPR = 90 degrees?

I found the answer on another website, but they were talking about vectors, which I don't understand, and which I am not supposed to understand yet in my book. I am looking for a way to find it without vectors.

I honestly don't know where to begin with this one.

I would begin by drawing a sketch.

Did they tell you which side is 10cm, AB or AD?

When QPR is a right angle, then triangles QAP and PBR are similar right triangles. That is, ratios of their corresponding sides are equal, so you could consider writing a proportion.

Cheers
