If a + 2 (x + 1) = s, what is x + 1, in terms of s and a ?

(a) s/2a

(b) s - a / 2

(c) s + a /2

(d) s/2 - a

(e) s/2 + a

I'm not sure I understand the question...can someone explain how you figure out which answer choice is correct?

The question is asking you to solve for x + 1; that is, to get x + 1 by itself on one side of the "equals" sign.

Are you familiar at all with solving linear equations? For instance, if you were given "3 + 2(x + 1) = 7", would you be able to solve?

Thank you! :D
