Okay i got assigned the following 2 questions for homework and I dont get either of them. Please help me if you can.
#1 Find the equation of the line that is tangent to the cirvle x^2+y^2= 25 at the point (3,4).
#2 Find the equation of the line tangent to the circle x^2+y^2-2x+4y= 20 at the point (5,1) Express your final answer in scalar form.

Any sort of help would be awesome I'm new at this course thanks! :D

1) Differentiate implicitly with respect to x. Plug in "3" for "x" and "4" for "y"; solve for dy/dx. This gives you the slope m of the tangent line. Then use the slope and the point to find the straight-line equation.

2) Same process.

I think, by "scalar form", they mean that, for "y = mx + b", you'd have "x = t and y = mt + b", but I could be wrong. If another tutor posts something else, go with that.

Eliz.
