First, 3 1/2 = 7/2 and 1 7/8 = 15/8 ;
like, a b/c = (a * c + b) / c : do you understand that?

Hello, lisia!

The very least you could do is baby-talk your way through . . .

Two chefs agree to bring \(\displaystyle 3\frac{1}{2}\) gallons of soup.
One brings \(\displaystyle 1\frac{7}{8}\)gallons.
What does thh other bring
The total is: \(\displaystyle \L 3\frac{1}{2} \;= \;\frac{7}{2}\,\times\frac{4}{4} \;= \;\frac{28}{8}\) gallons of soup.

. . An eighth-gallon is a <u>pint</u> . . . \(\displaystyle 27\) pints are expected.

One bringsL \(\displaystyle \L 1\frac{7}{8} \:= \:\frac{15}{8}\) gallons . . . He brings \(\displaystyle 15\) pints.

Hence: \(\displaystyle 28\) pints are expected, and \(\displaystyle 15\) pints are brought.

The other must bring the other \(\displaystyle 13\) pints: \(\displaystyle 13\text{ pints }=\:1\frac{5}{8}\text{ gallons.}\)
