How to simplify this equation

First, it is an expression, not an equation.

Second, here are two clues. What is the sign of (x - 1) if x < 1? Consequently, what is |x - 1| if x < 1?

Sorry I wanted to mean expression. Just was absent-minded.

If x < 1, it is definetely lower than 0 so it is ( - ) -(x - 1) ? and the other -(x-1) ?

\(\displaystyle
\frac{x - 1 -|x - 1|}{3 |1 - x|}\), when x < 1

I'll do a similar but different prolrm for you:

\(\displaystyle \frac{x - a -|x - b|}{c |b - x|}\), when x < b

\(\displaystyle = \ \frac{x - a -(b-x)}{c *(b - x)}\),

Now you can further simplify....

Minor Typo

So now you can evaluate the numerator of your fraction.

Jeff meant to type simplify above.
