How to draw tangent from a curve?

The answers i got for the gradient of tangent on a point of a curve are always wrong.

Question:how to systematically draw it accurately?

A method for drawing a tangent line to a curve that I learned in secondary school:
Hold a small mirror crossing the curve at the desired point and slowly turn it until the curve appears to go smoothly into the mirror. Holding it there, use the mirror as a straight edge to draw the line perpendicular to the curve. Now turn the mirror so that perpendicular line appears to go smoothly into the curve and use to draw the line perpendicular to that perpendicular, the tangent to the curve at that point.
