How to do Inequalities?

I was absent from school for a while, and was sent home with a plethora of homework. So, one page was on Inequalities, and I had my best friend help me, and I even tried just reading from the book, but I couldn't figure it out. I just don't get the whole function of it, like how you know which number you subtract from each side or... I don't know, but I really need help because It's due tomorrow.
Some of the questions were:

s > -4

y > 3

t _> -4

a _> 3

h < 2
