I have a retail related question that I know the answer to but trying to understand how to solve formulaically in excel for more efficient approach in the future.

My department sold 82,384 packages since doing a 2 for $4 promotion. The average selling price was $2.2461955. Retail price is $2.49 for a single unit.

The questions to solve for are: 1) How many packages were sold as a single unit? 2) How many packages were sold as 2 for $4?

Answer - Single: 41,393; 2 for $4: 40,991

There are several ways to approach the problem. One of the ways would be to define:

#of single package sold = S

# of packages sold at discount = D

S + D = 82384

Now continue...

There is something wrong here.

The number of packages sold at discount (2 for $4) should be an "even" number .
