I am trying to solve the following problem:
"The ABC chairlift has a vertical rise of 900 feet, and the XYZ chairlift has a vertical rise of 1200 feet. Both chairlifts start at the ski lodge where Bob starts and ends his day. Bob skied a total of 15,900 vertical feet and rode only these two chairlifts for a total of 16 times. How many times did he ride each chairlift?"

Do you include the 900 ft. from the ABC chairlift or do you disregard it since the 1200 ft. is equal to 900+300 ft.? Then do you divide or multiply to try and come up with the answer?

times he rode the lifts=16
let x be the number of times he rode the 900 ft lift
then 16-x is the number of times he rode the 1200 ft lift

Total distance he rode=15,900
15,900 = 900x+[16-x][1200
15,900=900x -1200x+ 19200
15,900 = -300 x+19,200
300x+15900=19,200
300x=19,200-15900
300x=3,300
x=11
he rode the 900 ft lift 11 times and the 1200 lift 5 times

Arthur
please check the math.

Thank you very much, Arthur Ohlsten! I was having a difficult time figuring it out. So thanks again! :D

Art does not remind me that I have a soul (whatever that is); but, art does provide me with an analgesic for the crushing pain.
