I will be the first to admit my math skills are not great and I need some help figuring out how many floor planks I need.
I have a room that is 10' x 12' and the planks are 36" x 4". I think I need 78 planks but I need to be sure before I purchase them. Sorry this is probably not a very challenging math question but it is important to me.

Thanks,
Nefertiti

Suggestions:

Convert each dimension of one plank in terms of feet.

Divide the area of the room in square feet by the area
of one plank in square feet.

36" = 3 ft

You'll need 4 planks to cover 4" width of your floor. To cover 10 ft (=120") then you'll need 30 times that. So in total you'll need (4 * 30 = ) 120 planks - at least.

When you are purchasing for a "real" project - it is advisable buy some extra (~10% of total needed - depending on how those are bundled).

Hello, Nefertiti!

I have a room that is 10' x 12' and the planks are 36" x 4".
I think I need 78 planks. . No

Subhotosh is correct . . . 120 planks.

The room is 120 x 144 inches.

Code:
      : - - - - - -  144  - - - - - - - - :
   -  *-----------------------------------*
   :  |                                   |
   :  |                                   |
   :  |                                   |
  120 |                                   |
   :  |                                   |
   :  |                                   |
   :  *--------*--------*--------*--------*
   :  |        |        |        |        | 4
   -  *--------*--------*--------*--------*
      : - 36 - : - 36 - : - 36 - : - 36 - :
We see that a row can be filled with four planks.
And there will be thirty such rows.

Therefore: .\(\displaystyle 4\times30 \:=\:120\) planks are needed.

Thank you all so much and thanks for explaining how to achieve the answer so next time I will be able to do it myself, I really appreciate it!

Thanks,
Nefertiti
