How many gallons of washer fluid that is 13.5% antifreeze must a manufacturer add to 200 gallons of washer fluid that is 11% antifreeze to yield washer fluid that is 13% antifreeze?

Looks like you are start at the very beginning - so I'll start you off.

First you need to name the variable whose magnitude needs to be calculated.

So

let the volume of 13.5% fluid needed = V gallons

Now continue....

ok this is what i did.
v(0.135) + 200(0.11) divided by v+200 = 0.13(v+200)
I came out with an answer of 800.

I am not sure what you are writing above. It should be:

v * 0.135 + 0.11*200 = (200+v)*0.13

v = 800 gallons

You should state your reasons for doing that. For example, "200 gallons of washer fluid that is 11% antifreeze" contains .11(200)= 22 gallons of antifreeze. If we add X gallons of the 13.5% antifreeze fluid, we will have 200+ X gallons and that will contain \(\displaystyle .13(200+ X)= 26+ .13X\) gallons of anti-freeze. That is, we must add 26+ .13X- 22= 4+ .13X gallons of anti-freeze. Since the X gallons was of a 13.5% fluid, We must have .135X= 4+ .13X so that .005X= 4. X= 4/.005= 800 gallons.
