Can anyone please help?
It would be greatly appreciated.

Your equation (a/4 - 1 = 2) says :
divide a by 4
subtract 1 from the result
this leaves 2

Start by adding 1 to both sides; this leaves:
a/4 = 3

You now have:
Code:
 a     3
 -  =  -
 4     1
Now do a crisscross multiplication:
a * 1 = 3 * 4
a = 12

Clear?
