So should I ask for around the median income listed?
Are you saying that you are applying for an employment position, and you're asking math volunteers from around the world for career counselling?

You might want to try asking a career advisor in your locality, somebody who has specific and local knowledge regarding your career field. We can only help with the math, which apparently is not actually the issue in your case. ;)

Does the median mean that most 50% of the civil engineers in this area are making $72,329?

I don't understand the phrase 'most 50%'. Median means middle -- half of the engineers (in the set that we're talking about) earn more than the median salary, and the other half earn less than the median.

So should I ask for around the median income listed?

Should I not accept an offer anything lower than $60,720?

I agree with stapel. We cannot answer these personal questions.

If I were you, I would accept the "job" offer even if it paid at the end of first quartile of the salary range.

Does money even matter in life?

To me it doesn't!

One could be dirt poor and still be happy as long as they were living their life on their own accord rather than some imaginary deity telling you what to do or what not to do in life thus the books of Lord that were rightly rejected by those who seen the light Divine in utter darkness of broad daylight of dog days of summer in New York with Northerly wind of 10 nautical miles and by the time you get to Niagara Falls it gets cloudy and misty and you feel like saying:

What a Wonderful World! across the border in Cool Canada.
