My daughter has no Math text book this year and I do not recall nor can I find info on how to do this problem.

Problem is in relation to graphing points.

"Use the given numbers to create an ordered pair representing a point located on the x-axis"

Given numbers are -6 -2 0 3 5

They are not represented as coordinates/ordered pairs. Just numbers.

If someone could please explain how I am to use the numbers and a solution or even another problem with solution to use as an example would be much appreciated!!

{ (0)+(-6), (3)-((5)+(-2)) }
or
{ (-6)+(-2)+(5)+(3), 0 }
or
Anything with 0 for y co-ordinate.

She is in 6th Grade.

There is a graph given in the previous problem that has points M (-7,0), L (0,7), K (7,0), N (0, -7) plotted out. No graph is offered for this problem unless that one is intended to be used..?

What is the formula called for the math you are doing to know what to add/subtract and where each number goes?

Hello Mrs. Pratt:

I'm a bit confused, too, as the problem statement is not entirely clear.

Is the given list a 'number bank' from which we may simply withdraw any pair of numbers that work?

Or, are we supposed to interpret the phrase "use the given numbers" as meaning "use all of the given numbers"?

I suppose that one might also interpret the ambiguity to allow repeats, as in (0,0).

 As a student, I would turn in more than one answer (including an explanation for why), whenever I had an assignment that was not clear.

I don't know what your daughter's instructor wants to see, but I think that the main point of this wanting exercise is to ensure that your daughter understands the meaning of xy-coordinates (in particular, what the value of a y-coordinate tells us).

Ask your daughter to explain, for example, what the number -6 denotes in the ordered pair (-6, 5). What does the number 5 denote? If your daughter cannot answer these two questions, I suggest you tell her to post a question about her confusion, so that we can help her get back on track regarding basic definitions.

Regards

No graph is offered for this problem

No graph is needed. What's needed is a clear understanding of definitions.

1) What is the x-axis

2) What does x represent in (x,y)

3) What does y represent in (x,y)

What is the formula called for the math you are doing?

Are you asking about the arithmetic in Bob Brown's reply?

:)

Graphing points on an X-Y grid

QUESTION:

"Use the given numbers to create an ordered pair representing a point located on the x-axis"

Given numbers are -6 -2 0 3 5

WORKED EXAMPLE:

Question:
Using any two numbers from -7,-3,0,2,6 write an ordered pair which represents a point on the y-axis.
Answer:
important point: When plotting a point on an x-y grid always start with your pen at the centre where the two axes cross (this point is called the origin). The origin has coordinates (0,0).

*To plot (1,0) shift your pen 1 unit right and mark the point.

*To plot (-1,0) shift your pen 1 unit left and mark the point.

*To plot (0,1)) shift your pen 1 unit up and mark the point.

*To plot (0,-1) shift your pen 1 unit down and mark the point.

Note:
The first two points you have plotted are located on the x-axis 1 unit either left or right of the origin.
The ordered pair for each point has 0 as the second number in the pair. This 0 tells us that each point has a y value of 0 because we have not moved up or down to plot the points.

The last two points you have plotted are located on the y-axis 1 unit either above or below the origin.
The ordered pair for each point has 0 as the first number in the pair. This 0 tells us that each point has an x value of 0 because we have not moved left or right to plot the points.

We now know that to write an ordered pair representing a point on the y-axis we must make sure we write 0 as the first number in the pair. Using the numbers 7,-3,0,2,6 we can write (0, 2) as an ordered pair which corresponds to a point on the y-axis. Other possible ordered pairs are (0, 7) , (0, -3) and (0, 6).

If we had to use the numbers -4, -1, 0, 3, 8 to write all possible ordered pairs corresponding to points on the x-axis we must remember to write 0 as the second number in the pair. In this case possible ordered pairs are (-4, 0) , (-1, 0), (3,0) and (8,0).
