Hello,

Sorry I'm sure I'm gonna bore you guys....My 6th grader is having trouble with math and I can't figure it out. I have the answer to the problem, we just have to show work, that's where I lose it all. The problem 153/495= .309090909 We wrote it all down and when you take the 3 x 495= 1485 then we subtracted that from the 153.0 and got 45 or 4.5, i'm not sure where the decimal goes... then how or why do we add the zero? Thanks for your help! Vern

Please post the exact problem that was given to your 6 th grader. Did the problem ask you to convert a fraction to decimal by long division?

Hi there:

The decimal points line up, as shown below.

We continue to add zeros to the number (dividend), as needed, whenever the divisor is too big.

I'm hoping the image below is self-explanatory. If it's not, then let us know, and we will find some lessons on the Internet. (Or, you can search yourself by googling keywords: how to long division.)

Thanks Mark! I had about the same thing written down, of course the 6th grader isn't going to believe mommy. It made alot more sense to him coming from you. Vern
