Hello Jack:
We ask that students do not post lists of homework exercises, without asking any questions of their own. Please check out our forum guidelines; here's a link to the
summary page. (You'll find links to the complete rules and guidelines appear near the bottom.)
Do you have a textbook? If so, look at the index under "graph" for a section on transformations. If you have any questions about your lessons or notes, those questions are what we need to see.
You're told that symbol f(x) = x^2
Do you know that symbol f(x) is just another name for symbol y.
Therefore, adding some amount
a to the y-coordinate of a point shifts the point vertically by
a units.
Since every point on the parabola of y=x^2 is shifted
a units, the entire graph moves
a units (up or down, depending on whether
a is positive or negative; of course, the graph does not shift at all, if a=0).
Please explain what you do not understand, about these exercises, so that tutors may determine where to begin helping you.
Thank you!
