A street vendor sells two types of newspapers, one for 40 cents and the other for 25 cents. If one day it sold 100 newspapers and tool in 28 dollars exactly, how many 25 cent newspapers did it sell?

Phase #1 - Name Stuff.

Name what? What does it want? Name that.

F = # of 40¢ newspapers sold
T = # of 25¢ newspapers sold

Phase #2 Now translate.

one day it sold 100 newspapers

F + T = 100

Stare at this until you see it.

and took in 28 dollars exactly

F*(0.40) + T*(0.25) = 28.00

Stare at this until you see it.

Phase #3 - Answer the question.

The problem statement asks ONLY for the 25¢ newspaper count. You MAY not have to solve for both to find a solution. Let's see what you get.

I can, but if you need me to do that, I have to suspect that you are in the wrong class.

So far, you've demonstrated only typing. Let's see some of your best mathematics. Solve away! Let's see what you get.
