I am taking Econ quant meth and I need to solve this.

Perform the indicated operations and simplify

(x-4y)^2+4(x+y)(x-2y)+x(5x+2y+5)

You need an equation to solve something, so you must have left out the right-hand-side :)

(i.e. your expression needs to = 0 or something similar)

The OP said 'solve' in his post, so I assumed he'd left out something.

Otherwise you're right. He might even be trying to graph a relation of some sort.

Hello, Chapillac!

If you don't know how to combine polynomials,
. . you need more help than we can provide.

\(\displaystyle \text{Perform the indicated operations and simplify:}\)

. . \(\displaystyle (x-4y)^2+4(x+y)(x-2y)+x(5x+2y+5)\)

\(\displaystyle (x^2 - 8xy + 16y^2) + 4(x^2 - xy - 2y^2 ) + 5x^2 + 10xy + 5x \)

. . . \(\displaystyle =\;x^2 - 8xy + 16y^2 + 4x^2 - 4xy - 8y^2 + 5x^2 + 10xy + 5x\)

. . . \(\displaystyle =\;10x^2 - 2xy + 8y^2 + 5x\)

Hello, Chapillac!

\(\displaystyle (x^2 - 8xy + 16y^2) + 4(x^2 - xy - 2y^2 ) + 5x^2 + 10xy + 5x \)

. . . \(\displaystyle =\;x^2 - 8xy + 16y^2 + 4x^2 - 4xy - 8y^2 + 5x^2 + 10xy + 5x\)

. . . \(\displaystyle =\;10x^2 - 2xy + 8y^2 + 5x\)

Almost:

\(\displaystyle (x^2-8xy+16y^2)+4(x^2-xy-2y^2)+5x^2+2xy+5x\)

\(\displaystyle x^2-8xy+16y^2+4x^2-4xy-8y^2+5x^2+2xy+5x\)

\(\displaystyle 10x^2-10xy+8y^2+5x\)
