Me and my math group are stuck on this problem for our review. We have been working on it for 4 hours and 17 minutes, PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

Jan is being hired for a new job. Her work week will be 40 hours long. Part of the week, Jan will be the office manager which pays $21.50 per hour. The rest of the week Jan will be the assistant office manager, which pays $17.50 per hour. If Jan's weekly salary will be $800, how many hours per week will Jan work at each task?

A. Write a system of equations that represents the given situation, then solve the system.

B. Explain the meaning of your answers in this situation.

If your group has worked on this problem for so long (over 4 hours) you should surely have some ideas....please share them with us so we can see what you've done so far. When we see how you've approached the problem, we can better determine how to help you.

Hint: did you do something like this?

Let x = hours worked as office manager
let y = hours worked as assistant

And then what??

All we know is that she works 40 hours total and makes $800. Every time we've tried solving for either the money or hours we don't even come close.

Re: help with systems

take the great advice by Mrspi and...

Let x = hours worked as office manager
Let y = hours worked as assistant

the amount of money that she makes as an office manager is (21.50)(x)

the amount of money that she makes as an assistant is (17.50)(y)

if you added both of these expression up, they must equal 800.

so now you have: 21.5x + 17.5y = 800

we know that the total amount of hours is 40, so: x + y = 40

Thus you have the system:

21.5x + 17.5y = 800
x + y = 40

can you solve it and explain the answer?

Re: help with systems

not a prob. just practice, practice and you'll become great at these.
