Help with matrices

started with

1 -1 4
-2 3 h

i reduced it down to

1 0 12+h
0 1 h+8

h= -12, and -8 should make it inconsistent but the book says all 'h' values are acceptable?

You don't - it gets archived in case somebody else needs similar help

so after row reduction you get

x₁ = 12+h

x₂ = h+8

The domain of (12+h) and (h+8) is (-∞<h<∞). Thus any value of h is acceptable.
