I am trying to solve this question. Can anyone help? I know the answer. I am trying to figure the equation?

Samantha saved $13 by buying a used DVD
. She paid $5 less than half the original price of a new one. How much did Samantha pay for a used DVD?

I believe the answer is y=1/2 x -5

If she saves $13.00 by buying used, this means the new DVD was $13.00
Let x=the price of the brand new DVD

If she paid five dollars less than half the original price, you must have 1/2 x -5
I think in this question, the $13.00 is useless and trying to trick you. You might want to get another opinion though.

Suppose we let x = price of a new DVD

Then, because she paid $5 less than half the original price of a new one,
(1/2)x - 5 = price of a used DVD

And we know that
(price of a new DVD) - (price of a used DVD) = savings

We have an expression for the price of a new DVD, an expression for the price of a used DVD, and we also know that she saved $13.

We can write the equation by substituting the expressions into this sentence:
(price of a new DVD) - (price of a used DVD) = savings
x - [(1/2)x - 5] = 13

Solve that equation to get the value of x....but remember that you are asked what she paid for the used DVD. Because we know she saved $13, you can subtract $13 from the value of x and that will be how much she paid for the used DVD.
