Is this what you meant? And what are the instructions? What are you supposed to be doing with this expression?

you really need to use grouping symbols ...

(t^4 - t^3 - 14t^2 + 7t - 4)/(t - 4)

are you familiar with synthetic division ?

the quotient is t^3 + 3t^2 - 2t - 1 - 8/(t - 4)
