Help please

3x-1=4

The way I understand it is that you want to get the x by itself so I turn the-1 into a positive 1, and move it by the 4

3x -1 =4
+1 +1
_________

next I add 4+1 which is equal to 5

3x -1 =4
+1 +1
_________
5

Do I have to do anything else? In the example there was not a number before the x.

3x -1 =4
+1 +1
_________
5

Do I have to do anything else?

You have to write the answer, at some point!

x = what?

How about writing stuff horizontally?

3x - 1 + 1 = 4 + 1

You can simplify, at this point because you know the values for -1+1 and 4+1.

3x = 5

Now, use Denis' hint, to finish solving for x.

Linear Equation...Solve for x

How do you work this problem
IF 3x-1=4, then what is x

3x - 1 = 4

Add 1 to both sides.

3x - 1 + 1 = 4 + 1

On the left side, we are left with 3x and on the right side we now have 5.

3x = 5

To find x, divide both sides by 3. Can you finish now?
