Think of numbers as points on the Real number line. As we move from left to right along the Real number line, numbers get bigger. As we move from right to left, numbers get smaller.
If a number lies to the right of another number, it is greater than the other.
If a number lies to the left of another number, it is less than the other.
I'll show you the first one, with a sloppy sketch.
