O.k so I managed to make two equations out of a question my teacher said they were right but i'm noy sure how to solve them?

A) 7.1y=X

B) 6.0y+1/2(0.2)y²= X+12

how would I go about fiquring it out?
:?: :?:

During a race, Runner A is traveling at a speed of 7.1 m/s and is currently 12m in front of Runner B.
Runner B is traveling at a speed of 6.0 m/s and wants to catch up to Runner A.
If Runner B starts to accelerate at a rate of 0.2 m/s/s,
how long in seconds will it take him to catch up to runner A?
If there are 250 m remaining in the race,(relative to Runner A) who will win the race?

So she wanted me to make one equation for each runner and then she said I will have to sub one equation into another and make a quadratic equation

A) 7.1y=X

B) 6.0y+1/2(0.2)y²= X+12

that's what i got so far

yes she did but i was told to use these
A) 7.1y=X

B) 6.0y+1/2(0.2)y²= X+12

plus I figured it out graphically and they intersected at about 17.5 s so i wasn't sure if 11s was right......

Then it might help if, as previously requested, you provided the complete instructions for this exercise, wherein the variables "y" and "X" are no doubt defined. It might also be nice if, having been provided a fully-worked solution, you showed at least some attempt toward integrating the set-up you've been given with the solution you've been given.

You figured which out graphically? What intersected at 17.5 seconds?

Please reply with a clear listing of your work and reasoning. Thank you.

Eliz.
