I am supposed to use the quadratic formula with these equations but they have powers higher than two and I am not sure how to get the problem started.
x^4+36=13x^2

Try substituing u = x[sup:2x6uvj4q]2[/sup:2x6uvj4q].

This approach will frequently not work, but it is a useful one to try when dealing with polynomials with few terms but high powers.
