That is incomprehensible. Do not write 11 as 1 1.How do you do a negative fraction problem like -1 1/4- (-1 1/8)????
Is it supposed to be \(\displaystyle (-11 / 4) - (-11 /8) = \dfrac{-11}{4} - \dfrac{-11}{8}\)

I'm thinking 1 1/4 and 1 1/8 are mixed numbers.
We rarely do arithmetic with numbers in that form; convert them to improper fractions first.
After the conversion, get a common denominator and then follow the usual rules for working with signed numbers (like, subtracting a negative number is the same as adding its opposite).
