I have a question on how to figure a problem.

If the formula is F = 6(S - 25) + 35, and if I know that F is equal to 155, then how do I find out what S is?

Thank you.

Subtract 35 from 155; divide by 6; add 25.

I dont quite understand the way that you have it worded.
The tutor provided a clear listing of the steps to take in solving this linear equation in the standard way. Are you not familiar with solving linear equations...?

I am learning them which is why I posted my question. I am not following the 35 from 155...etc since there is no 155 on the right.

Hello, misermom!

I'll walk you through so you can understand:

Solve for \(\displaystyle S\):\(\displaystyle \L \;F\,=\,6(S\,-\,25)\,+\,35\)

Subtract \(\displaystyle 35\) from both sides:\(\displaystyle \L\;F\,-\,35\,=\,6(S\,-\,25)\)

Distribute the left side:\(\displaystyle \L \;F\,-\,35\,=6S\,-\,150\)

Add \(\displaystyle 150\) to both sides of the equation:\(\displaystyle \L \;F\,+\,115\,=\,6S\)

Divide both sides by \(\displaystyle 6\): \(\displaystyle \L \;\frac{F\,+\,115}{6}\,=\,S\,\,\,\Rightarrow\,\,\,S\,=\,\frac{F\,+\,115}{6}\)

Now you know \(\displaystyle F\,=\,155\), so plug it in....plug it in! :)
