Hello, Studentmom!

A basketball team has won 50 games of 75 played.
The team still has 45 games to play.
How many of the remaining games must the team
win in order to win 60% of all games played during the season?
We can solve this without Algebra . . . just common sense.

The team has played 75 games and has 45 games left to play.
. . Evidently, their season consists of 120 games.

They want to win 60% of the 120 games: \(\displaystyle 0.60\,\times\,120\:=\:72\) games.

They have already won 50 games.

Therefore, they need to win 22 more games.

IF you MUST use algebra:
x = games team has to win
50 + x = .60(75 + 45)
50 + x = .60(120)
50 + x = 72
x = 72 - 50 = 22 = per Soroban
