Homer drove as fast as he could to get 60 miles ahead of Mae. If Homer drove at 17 miles per hour and accomplished his goal 20 hours after they both started, how fast did Mae drive?"

I can't figure out all the knowns to solve the unknown. I have this:

RhTh + 60 = RmTm
Rh= 17

But I can't figure out the time

M.....@ m mph........>(20 hrs)
H.....@ 17 mph...................................................>(20 hrs)

Distance by Mary: 20m
Distance by Homer: 20m + 60

speed = distance / time; so:
17 = (20m + 60) / 20

Solve that for m.

what time are you trying to figure out. Both Homer and Mae reached the points stated in 20 hours.

Let x = the distance Mae drives in the 20 hours.
Then, (x + 60)/17 = 20 or x = 280
280 + 60 = 240
Mae's speed was 280/20 = 17 mph
17(20) = 340
14(20) = 280
340 - 280 = 60.
