What you do depends on what you were asked to do. Are you solving it, graphing it, or what?

It is uncommon to be given a single linear equation in two variables. More often, you will be given a system of equations in more than one variable and asked to solve the system. Is that what you're having trouble with, by any chance?

if you're given 3x = 5y, then you have 3x - 5y = 0

you (normally!) would be given a 2nd similar equation, like 2x + 3y = 24

you would then solve for x and y using the 2 equations

BUT, if you're ONLY given 3x = 5y, then not much can be done:
x = 5y / 3 or y = 3x / 5

...and are you telling us your teacher "suddenly" sprang equations
with 2 unknowns on you, without any explanation 8-)
