Problem:
You need to cover a textbook. The book measures 10 inches long and 8 inches wide closed. You need to cut a piece of paper for the cover that is 2 inches larger on each of the four sides than than the size of the book when it is open.

A. What are the dimensions of the cover?
B.What is the area of the cover?

I am a 5th grader and taking the PSSA's soon and I don't know how to go about this problem. Please help me solve this problem and how you got the answer.
THANK YOU ! :D

Hello, Scarpetta!

Did you make a sketch?

You need to cover a textbook.
The book measures 10 inches long and 8 inches wide closed.
You need to cut a piece of paper for the cover that is 2 inches larger on each of the four sides
than than the size of the book when it is open.

A. What are the dimensions of the cover?

B. What is the area of the cover?
Evidently this book has no thickness . . . otherwise, it should have been mentioned.

The book is 10 inches high and 8 inches wide when closed.

When it is open, it is 10 inches high and 16 inches wide.

We want a 2-inch margin all around this rectangle.
Code:
      : 2 : - - 16 - - : 2 :
    - *--------------------* -
    2 | | :
    - | *------------* | :
      | | 16 | | :
    10| |10 | | 14
      | | | | :
    - | *------------* | :
    2 | | :
    - *--------------------* -
      : - - - - 20 - - - - :

A. The cover will be \(\displaystyle 14\) by \(\displaystyle 20\) inches.

B. The area is: \(\displaystyle \,14\,\times\,20\:=\:280\) square inches.
