One-fourth of the students in Luke's class are walking for charity. Eighteen of the students in his class are not walking. Sixty students from his school are walking. How many students in Luke's class are walking? Explain.

If one-fourth are walking, how many fourths aren't walking?

Divide the "not walking" number into this many pieces. Each piece is one-fourth.

\(\displaystyle \text{ How many students in Luke's class are walking? Explain.}\)

If one-fourth of his class is walking, then three-fourths of his class is not walking.
Hence, there are three times as many non-walkers as walkers.

Since there are 18 non-walkers, there must be 6 walkers.
