if the focus points are (-1,6) (5,6) and D1, & D1+D1=12, what would be the problem to work from by working backwards & how would i go about finding it?

Just slow down, take a breather. What is the complete problem?

the only thing i'm given is that the focus points are (-1,6) and (5,6) and D1 + D2 = 12..i need to figure out what the problem would be..im working backwards.

For one, a parabola only has one focus so there are two parabolas? What do D1 and D2 represent?

i believe the focus is 3. D1 is the first focus point to the vertex then D2 is from the vertex to the second focus point.

As I said, a parabola has only one focus. What conic are we talking about? An ellipse?

Perhaps something like this (F1 and F2 are the foci of the ellipse):
Code:
                   /|\
              F1    |       F2
               *    6       *
      ---------+----+-------+----->
              -1    |       5     x
? Could you label/draw D1 and D2 from there?

no, because I don't know the verticals..what would the equation be?

would i take D1 to the verticle then verticle to D2?

We know the center is (2 , 6) and c=3.

So all we know is

\(\displaystyle \mbox{ \frac{(x - 2)^2}{a^2} + \frac{(y - 6)^2}{b^2} = 1}\)

and \(\displaystyle \mbox{ a^2 = b^2 + 3^2\).

Code:
                   /|\
                 *  6     *        *
                F1  |    ctr       F2
       ----------+--+-----+--------+----->
                -1  |     2        5     x
Have you any idea (have you got a diagram? a completely-worded question?) where (lines) D1 and D2 are supposed to be?
