Help a Mom with Math Homework

What were the instructions? Are you working in some number base (other than 10, obviously)? Is this a riddle that you think might be mathematical, but you don't know for sure?

my college class - the professor handed this out for homework...hes strong on word problems.....the only thing i can figure is the pattern is on a diagnal....so the answer would be 0?

he didnt help us at all with hints....just handed it out and said figure it out....Im a mom going to college for a degree in elementary ed...

What "diagonal"? Is there a table or a grid or a graphic that goes with this?

I'm sorry but, without explanation or instructions, this is just somebody's idea of a riddle or a puzzle. I don't see how this is "mathematical".
