I believe I am approching this problem the wrong way, but this is as far as I get.

Solve for x.

x-3[6-2(4x+2)]=56 <-- orginal problem
x-3[6-8x+-4]=56
x-3[-8x+2]=56
-8xsquared+2x+24x-6=56
-8xsquared+26x-6=56
-8xsquared+26x=56

I do not know where to go from where, if this is the correct way to do this problem.

x-3[6-8x+-4]=56

x-3[-8x+2]=56 ?Your work is correct, through this line.

-8xsquared+2x+24x-6=56 … This line looks like you used FOIL.

The original equation, as you've typed it, does not require FOIL. We would use FOIL only if the expression inside the square brackets were being multiplied by the binomial x - 3.

The way it is now, the expression inside the square brackets only gets multiplied by -3.

Did you mean to type the original equation like the following, instead ?

[x - 3]*[6 - 2(4x + 2)] = 56

:?

I wrote the equation exactly like it was given to me.

Then don't use FOIL!!

Use the Distributive Property to multiply -3 times [-8x + 2], on the lefthand side.

Combine like-terms.

Subtract the resulting constant on the lefthand side from both sides of the equation, in order to isolate the x-term.

Then divide both sides by the coefficient on x to finish.

Please continue to show your work, if you would like more help.

x = 62/25[/spoiler:2lygazfw]

Thank you so much for your help. I got the correct answer and it even helped me on other problems. I thought I had said I had solved it in my reply, it must have gotten erased somehow when I was switching screens. Thank you again.
