Find the GCF for the given numbers: 48 and 52

48= 8*6 = 4*2*3*2 = 2*2*2*3*2 = 2[sup:2v0gx0mp]4[/sup:2v0gx0mp] * 3

52= 2*26 = 2*2*13 = 13*2[sup:2v0gx0mp]2[/sup:2v0gx0mp]

I think the GCF is 2. Is this right?

You are looking for the largest number that will "go into" both 48 and 52. You did the factoring correctly. The next step is to decide the greatest factor common to both 48 and 52. You spotted a two. Is 2[sup:3o7vlbxe]2[/sup:3o7vlbxe] common to both? Is it the largest?

Could you give me some guidance?

I have not had a problem with GCF in the past.

How about if you LEAVE your factorizations this way:

48 = 2*2*2*2*3
52 = 2*2*13

Now, what factors are COMMON to both factorizations?

48 = 2*2*2*2*3
52 = 2*2*13

Do you see that the common factors of BOTH 48 and 52 are 2*2

So the greatest common factor of 48 and 52 is 2*2, or 4.
