Our instructor has us doing some graphing

the equation is y=x^2-1 on one of the problems

if you take the equation where x = -3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3

y=-3^2-1 y=-10

but i think we should be making U shaped graphs and thats makes like an S shaped graph

when i use

y=(-3)^2-1 y=8

which gives me a table of values like

x | y
-3 | 8
-2 | 3
-1 | 0
0 | -1
1 | 0
2 | 3
3 | 8

and this give me the U shaped graph

which is the proper way of doing this

Welcom Scotty !

You have y=x^2-1
Know what you've made at the first is wrong . . .

Because as we all know that any Real number who or which has an even power has its answer positive.

What you did last is correct.

:wink:

You don't need to find so many points.

Let x = -2, - 1, 0, 1 and 2.

After doing the math, we get the following points:

(-2, 3), (-1, 0), (0, -1), (1, 0) and (2, 3).

We now graph each point on the xy-plane.

This is a parabola that opens upward.
