A line through the points
$(2, -9)$
and
$(j, 17)$
is parallel to the line
$2x + 3y = 21$
. What is the value of
$j$
?

1) find the slope of the line between the points (2,-9) and (j, 17)

2) rewrite the 2nd equation in slope intercept form

3) equate the two slopes

4) solve for j

Here is a second way to solve it.
Every line parallel to \(2x+3y=21\) looks like \(2x+3y=d\).
Use the point \((2-9)\) to find the value of \(d\).
Then substitute in \((j,17)\) to find \(j\).
