i dont know how to type equations here but what i need help with is:

L/W = W/L-W

i need to figure out the width of a golden rectangle if the length is 48"

please help if this makes sense. im gonna try and figure out how to post properly here. Thanks!

L/W = W/L-W <<< Is this L/W = W/L-W or L/W=W/(L-W)? Once you have determined that, then you need to know that the golden rectangle has its sides in the ratio of 1 to \(\displaystyle \frac{1+\sqrt{5}}{2}\). Then plug in the knowns (including L=48) into your original proportion and solve for W.

Multiply the length by \(\displaystyle \frac{\sqrt{5}-1}{2}\)

L/W = W/(L-W)

L[sup:gbrdbezr]2[/sup:gbrdbezr] - WL = W[sup:gbrdbezr]2[/sup:gbrdbezr]

W[sup:gbrdbezr]2[/sup:gbrdbezr] + 48W - 48[sup:gbrdbezr]2[/sup:gbrdbezr] = 0

Solve the quadratic equation above.....

the equation is:

L/W = W/(L-W)
The way i need to solve this is to find the quadratic and then the solve using the quadratic formula.

This is what i have (wish i knew how to type properly. anyone know an easy way or site to type equations so they look normal?)

im cross multiplying to get:
100-10W=W^2
W^2+10W-100=0
quad form:
W=(-48(+-) sq root 48^2-4(1)(-2304)) / 2
W=(-48(+-) sq root 11520)2
W= (-48(+-) 144 sq root 80)2
equation has to be positive so im elimination the neg
W=(-48+144 sq root 80)2
W= 48 sq root 80

where did i go wrong? theres no way the width is longer that the length??

quad form:
W=(-48(+-) sq root 48^2-4(1)(-2304)) / 2 <<< Does not follow from above
W=(-48(+-) sq root 11520)2

quad form:
W=(-48(+-) sq root 48^2-4(1)(-2304)) / 2 <<< Does not follow from above << how does it not follow i just replaced 48^2 with 2304??

W=(-48(+-) sq root 11520)/2
W= (-48(+-) 144 sq root 80)2
equation has to be positive so im elimination the neg
W=[-48+48?5]/2 = 48 * (?5 - 1)/2 = 29.665 = 30
W= 48 sq root 80

where did i go wrong? theres no way the width is longer that the length??
