GMAT question - for a substitution question

"For all positive intergers m, [m] = 3m when m is odd, and [m] = 1/2m when m is even. What does [9] x [6] ="
I thought that the m in the box meant that since 9 was odd m=3*9 and since 6 was even, m = 1/2*6 giving me 27 x 3 = 81 - but the answer is 27. how?
